JOB SUMMARY

The Parks/Facilities Specialist supports the City’s park operations by assisting in the supervision of maintenance teams and acting on behalf of the Parks Maintenance Crew Leader when needed. It ensures the effective upkeep of more than 2,600 acres of parks, open spaces, athletic fields, and downtown facilities through skilled equipment operation and comprehensive grounds and facility maintenance. The role also contributes to park construction and renovation projects while maintaining accurate maintenance documentation. Together, these responsibilities help sustain safe, welcoming, and high-quality public spaces for the community.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

  • Operates light to heavy equipment to support safe, effective maintenance, construction, and repair of City parks, recreation facilities, and public spaces.
  • Performs comprehensive grounds and landscape maintenance, including mowing, debris removal, gardening applications, soil and turf management, and assisting other City departments during emergencies.
  • Supports facility upkeep through assessing equipment/material needs, performing plumbing repairs, assisting with irrigation installation, and contributing to construction and renovation of park structures.
  • Participates in the preparation and maintenance of athletic fields, including fertilization and turf-care activities.
  • Assists the Parks Maintenance Crew Leader by providing guidance to other equipment operators and helping coordinate work activities.
  • Leads setup for City-sponsored special events, ensuring proper placement of tents, tables, and chairs.
  • Completes required maintenance documentation and performs other related duties to support park operations and public service outcomes.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS & PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent
  • Five (5) years of parks/grounds maintenance and/or other related experience (construction or repair)
  • Five (5) years of experience operating light to medium equipment
  • One (1) year of experience as a lead worker
  • A Class “A” Commercial Driver’s License is required within one (1) year of employment. A Commercial Learner’s Permit (CLP) is required within 90 days of employment.
  • Valid Texas Driver's license with an acceptable driving record required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of maintenance documentation and repair manuals to ensure accurate interpretation and application.
  • Skill in effective verbal and written communication to convey information clearly and maintain positive working relationships with staff, vendors, and the public.
  • Ability to work collaboratively under general supervision while exercising sound judgment and accountability for assigned tasks.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

This position requires the ability to lift up to 100 pounds frequently. Subject to standing, walking, lifting, carrying, pushing/pulling, reaching, handling, bending, twisting, balancing, vision, hearing, talking and foot controls frequently; fine dexterity, kneeling, crouching and climbing occasionally; sitting and crawling rarely.

WORK ENVIRONMENT

Working conditions involve exposure to variable and/or extreme weather conditions, machinery with moving parts, hazardous materials/ chemicals, and infectious diseases is involved; utilizes personal protective equipment as necessary.
