  • Extensive knowledge of building systems such as plumbing, electrical, and HVAC.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to plan maintenance schedules for building systems.
  • At least 1 year of experience planning, organizing, directing, and supervising assigned staff, including hiring and training.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite or related software as needed to complete reports, logs, and inventory for day-to-day operations.
  • Valid driver’s license.
  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to read, write, understand, and communicate in English and follow basic work instructions.
  • Ability to perform a range of physical tasks, including standing, sitting, walking, and keyboarding for up to 4 hours per day, depending on job tasks and location requirements.
  • Ability to grasp/squeeze, reach (including overhead reaching), and perform wrist flexion/extension for up to 1-2 hours per day, depending on job tasks and location requirements.
  • Ability to kneel/squat, bend/stoop, push/pull, twist, and climb stairs/ladders for up to 2-4 hours per day, depending on job tasks and location requirements.
  • Ability to lift and carry items up to 50 pounds unassisted as needed throughout the workday.
  • Required to work weekends and evenings as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working in a higher education environment and understanding of student housing facilities maintenance.
  • Experienced with purchasing maintenance supplies and equipment.
  • At least 3 years of experience planning, organizing, directing, and supervising assigned staff, including hiring and training.
  • Experience in addressing work conflicts with both internal and external stakeholders.
  • Knowledge of government regulations and code compliance to include oversight of ADA standards and accommodations, HazCom, Right to Know, Safety Data Sheets, Lifting techniques, and other job-related practices.
  • Experience with fleet management.

Job Description

The Department of Housing and Residential Life (DHRL) Facilities Maintenance Crew Supervisor position is responsible for supervising and supporting the Head Facilities Maintenance Worker and their teams with planning, organizing, directing, and overseeing the maintenance and repair of electrical, plumbing, heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC), carpentry, painting, and other building systems. They will be responsible for the administrative documentation of the day-to-day operations, performance management of their team, and providing feedback to DHRL leadership teams. This position is part of the Housing Facilities Service leadership team and offers quality customer service to students, staff, and guests. The Supervisor will have oversight of Head Facilities Maintenance Workers and will indirectly support the in-hall maintenance staff. This position will also be responsible for quality control of the resident halls assigned to their team. This position will report to the Assistant Director of Maintenance Operations.

Job Duties

Maintenance Operations

  • Evaluate systems or facilities to determine maintenance or repairs that need to be performed.
  • Works with the Assistant Director of Maintenance Operations to plan work priorities, obtain necessary supplies, and assess skills needed to complete tasks.
  • Facilitate team meetings to discuss upcoming work assignments and delegate work orders or projects to head maintenance workers.
  • Ensures maintenance and repair work is completed safely, effectively, and promptly.
  • Inspect work performed by maintenance workers or contractors.
  • Supervise a team of 3-4 Head Maintenance Workers to provide training to address technical issues or advanced problems and coordinate safety meeting topics.
  • Perform all physical aspects of assigned duties.

Administration and Supervision

  • Inspect and document the physical conditions of university housing facilities and individuals’ work performance.
  • Assists with the planning and preparing training and orientation for new maintenance team members.
  • Manage and support the Performance Management process designed to help staff set and accomplish goals that align with the Department of Housing and Residential Life’s mission and values through performance records and evaluations. Also, process and review time reports and absence documentation.
  • Manage preventive maintenance schedules, perform and update inspection reports, maintain supply order forms, key audits, and periodic project reports.
  • Use TXST resources to communicate by email, Teams, work cellphone, and office computer.
  • Work in conjunction with the Assistant Director for Maintenance Operations to create a training program to ensure the team is current with university-required training.
  • Attend weekly maintenance and department team meetings.
  • Serve as essential personnel and assist with emergencies on campus.
  • Meet regularly with area leadership to inspect facilities and identify areas of concern.
  • Obtain TXST driving privileges.
  • Other duties as assigned.
